Jesus is Made to Bear His Cross

Scripture

Isaiah 53.4-6
Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that made us whole, and with his stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

Matthew 27.31
And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the robe, and put his own clothes on him, and led him away to crucify him.

Luke 9.23
And he said to all, "If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me."

Opening Prayer

Leader:
We adore Thee, O Christ, and we praise Thee

All:
Because by Thy holy cross Thou hast redeemed the world

Meditation

Leader:
Consider that Jesus, in making this journey with the cross on His shoulders, thought of us, and offered for us, to His Father, the death that He was about to undergo.

My most beloved Jesus, I embrace all the tribulations that Thou hast destined for me until death. I beseech Thee, by the merits of the pain Thou didst suffer in carrying Thy cross, to give me the necessary help to carry mine with perfect patience and resignation. I love Thee, Jesus, my love, I repent of having offended Thee. Never permit me to separate myself from Thee again. Grant that I may love Thee always, and then do with me what Thou wilt.

Closing Prayers

All:
Our Father, Who art in Heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen

'Stabat Mater' Stanza

Leader:
Through her heart, His sorrow sharing
All His bitter anguish bearing
Now at length the sword had passed

All:
Holy Mother! pierce me through
In my heart each wound renew
Of my Saviour crucified
